Listen: What We Are Listening To @ MC’s New York Office #23

I’ve been spread thin like warm butter on a slice of artisan baguette the last couple of weeks putting together our next print issue - gathering departments, editing works, taking photos, scheming, plotting, etc - as well as in rounds of editing of the copy of another big project we have coming up, and so I had, for a time, regressed into a state that I like to call ‘soft-little-baby-in-the-womb’.

I have been listening almost exclusively to soft, old, comfortable music, in an effort to shelter my delicate head space from the onslaught of computer typing. That has led to a dearth of anything very innovative, however, with the release of certain albums, such as James Ivy’s and Winter’s, I’ve been reborn and am ready to find an edge again. I’ve been equally inspired by the positivity of a certain one of our ventures in music, and so those related artists are featured in this week’s listening as well.

For the last five or six weeks, we’ve ran a contest in partnership with our friends at Up Banking - its an initiative called Upstarters, and its meant to help Australian artists get a leg up in an unforgiving industry. The top five winners will be invited to play the Monster Children Showcase as BIGSOUND in Brisbane this Wednesday, which is where one special winner - the one who will walk away with $20,000 - will be announced.

In no particular order, taking the stage at the inaugural Upstarters Showcase are: Milly Strange, Local the Neighbour, Any Young Mechanic, Kate Moth, and Stimpies. A massive congratulations to all five. We can’t wait to see you rip it up in Brissy - and find out who’ll walk away with the $20,000 cash.

What a lovely, lovely thing that is, to give away something for nothing but the benefit of that which we all love: good music.
