Watch: A Day In The Life

Presented by Brixton

With all that is seemingly going weird in the surf world, one thing that is going right is seeing surfers as multidimensional humans who have interests outside of just surfing.

The best surf films, in my eyes, are the ones that give you access to what’s behind the curtain, the little quirks that make someone tick. Day In The Life a short clip featuring Chippa Wilson brought to you by Brixton filmed and edited by Jackson Jones is just that. While Chippa is known for his explosive surfing, it’s his quiet nature that makes him one of the most interesting surfers we all wish we could get to know over a beer. ‘It’s a little insight to my daily routine when I’m not off travelling around the globe. I don’t get too much time at home which makes it ever so sweet while I’m there — working on turning my desert block into a green oasis providing many many homes for all of the animals.’ Lucky Jacko, one of South Coast’s best surf filmers gets to do that all the time, which is why he’s a favourite among the surfers and why we hit him up to talk shop.

Hey Jacko.

Hey Sammy.

Well done on the film, super cool.

Thank you, do you like it?

Yeah. It reminds me of the What Youth videos.

Yeah that was kind of the idea. Chippa and I were sitting at his house, heaps hungover watching all that shit being like ‘oh we should bring them back.’ It’s sick to do something different like that because I feel as though everyone surfs the same now – everyone surfs good obviously but it’s cool to see something with a bit more personality.

Absolutely. I think this could be your thing. Bring them back.

It’d be sick to do something longer. Well not even longer but exploring different stuff I guess.

Yeah and go on a longer trip? Different zones.

That’s the plan I think for next year.

Really?

Yeah a full length thing.

Hell yeah.

Yeah start of next year.

With Chippa?

Yeah.

How long have you known Chippa for?

Maybe five years. We just got along heaps well. He would come and stay with me and my family, they just love him. He’s the best dude ever. They’re always asking about him and vice versa.

Makes a difference filming someone you get along with?

Oh yeah, definitely.

What’s the song at the start by the way?

Kicker by Alex G. Chippa plays it all day every day. Loves it. Pretty sure all the cats and dogs love it tool.

Next question. A very serious one.

Shit.

How many emu exports were deleted during the making of this clip?

Fuck (laughs). We were there for ten days. It was Brinkley’s birthday (Chippa’s partner), so lots of friends and family were there. He can drink me under the table every single time. Still got it.

What is it about Chippa that makes him so good to film?

He doesn’t fall off.

That’s a good start (laughs).

And he has some weird thing with the ocean. Connection? Nah I don’t know the word. That sounds a bit lame but something with the ocean where he just knows exactly where a wave is going. He could ride a longboard when there are no waves and still find a peak to take him all the way into shore. He also understands when it’s worth filming or he times it so that I can get a surf in or that it will be better at the end of the day. He just knows.

That’s a talent.

And he always has beers at the end of the day.

Yeah love that. We love a beer.

If you’re not having beers at the end of the day what are you doing?
