How To Throw A Party With Future Classic

Future Classic, the independent electronic label, is as iconic to the Australian music industry as the old guy sitting at the bar drinking his VB right on knock off every Friday.

A regular whose presence would be felt enormously if they ever left. They’ve been taking the underground overground for almost twenty years, with an impressive catalogue of artists including but not limited to Flume, Touch Sensitive, Sycco, Willo, Ta-ku, Hayden James and Flight Facilities. If there is a label who knows how to throw a party, it’s Future Classic, so of course, it’s only fitting they’re in charge of bringing the line-up of live performances and wall-to-wall sets from the city’s hottest DJs at this years Vivid LIVE with a Studio Party featuring Nikki Nair, Martyn Bootyspoon, Shake Daddy and Isa. We got to pick the brains of Andy Garvey behind the label about being one of the most ahead-of-the-trend wizards in the music business and what we can expect from this year’s party at the Sydney Opera House.

What has been your most memorable party Future Classic has held?

For me it is definitely FCX in 2015, the celebration of 10 years of future classic, and the debut show on the far side of the Opera House. It really felt like the whole roster was on fire, and it was very special to watch everyone share the same stage. Feels crazy to think that show was almost a decade ago now!

What has been the most rewarding aspect of Future Classic?

Seeing the projects and people we work with grow. Our team is small and nimble, so seeing everyone come together to do heavy lifts always is rewarding to watch and reflect on. In my role I also work across artist release projects from the first demo until it's release - and when it cuts through, it's very special.

And the biggest challenge?

Artist care is always the biggest challenge and top priority. I think because I sit on both sides of being both an artist and business person I can have a unique empathy for the artist care that's needed across all of our projects. It's always a delicate dance.

What’s the basics components of a good tune?

I'm always searching for music that is pushing the cusp of a new musical niche. Finding those people working down new musical rabbit holes is very exciting.

What goes into curating a wall to wall DJ set?

All you need is good songs!

What can we expect from this Vivid LIVE one?

Straight fire club music, no frills / all fun. On the line up we have Canadian Martyn Bootyspoon who is known for his sassy techno + rising star Nikki Nair who will have all things electro and techno - tinged with future pop. On support are two absolute gems of the local scene Shake Daddy & Isa - both who come with expert taste + maximum energy. I cannot wait for the crew to get back to the sweaty SoH studio!!
