WTF is ‘Ultra City Smiths’?

This looks so weird… Ultra City Smiths is a new AMC+ series made with stop-motion baby dolls. That can’t be good. Or can it?

What’s weirder, the animated series features one of the most impressive voice casts anyone has seen in years. Get for ready for it: Tom Waits, John C Reilly, Debra Winger, Jimmi Simpson (Westworld), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Dolemite Is My Name), Bebe Neuwirth (Cheers), Jason Mantzoukas (Big Mouth, Parks & Rec), Terry O’Quinn (Lost), Julian Barratt (The Mighty Boosh), Kristen Bell, Dax Shepard (Parenthood), Luis Guzmán (Boogie Nights, Romeo & Juliette), Melissa Villaseñor (SNL), Kurtwood Smith (That 70’s Show), Tim Heidecker (Tim & Eric duh), and Alia Shawkat (‘Maeby’ from Arrested Development)—and more—all voicing baby dolls in the very noir-looking world if Ultra City.

Here’s the setup: Two detectives (Simpson and Randolph) follow the case of a missing tycoon (Kurtwood Smith) in fictional Ultra City, a metropolis pushed to breaking point by corruption and crime. Ultra City Smiths was created by Steve Conrad (Patriot, Perpetual Grace) and Stoopid Buddy Stoodios (Robot Chicken, Crossing Swords), and premieres with two episodes, July 22 on AMC+
