Talk about making lemonade out of some big fat lemons.
Netflix’s latest comedy series, Space Force, takes President Trump’s ridiculous 2018 extension of the U.S. Armed Forces (remember his ‘Space Force’ announcement?) and puts Steve Carell in charge as the reluctant and under-qualified General Naird. How is that not going to be funny? And whose idea was it? ‘Netflix pitched the show to me,’ said Carell, ‘and then I pitched the show to Greg (Daniells, The Office), and we all had the same reaction to it. There was no show, there was no idea, aside from the title. Netflix asked, “Do you want to do a show called Space Force?” And I pretty much immediately said, “Well yeah, sure. That sounds great.” And then I called Greg, and I said, “Hey, you want to do a show called Space Force?” And he said, “Yeah, that sounds good. Let’s do it.” And it was really based on nothing, except this name that made everybody laugh. So we were off and running.’ Space Force stars Owen Daniels, Noah Emmerich, John Malkovich, Tawny Newsome, Ben Schwartz, and the late great Fred Willard. Out May 29.
