A new film chronicling the life and times of Billie Holiday is arriving via Hulu this February, and you can catch a sneak peek in the brand new trailer.
Directed by Lee Daniels (Monster’s Ball) and starring Andra Day as Holiday, The United States vs. Billie Holiday will tell the story of the incredible and tumultuous life one of the best voices to ever grace the stage. As the trailer reveals, Daniels’ retelling will feature the rise of a young teenager who started out playing in nightclubs in Harlem, to the beloved musical icon we now know today.
But it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the performer—over the years Holiday battled drug and alcohol addiction, prison stints and run-ins with the authorities. The name of the film draws inspiration from Holiday’s 1947 court case for the possession of narcotics in her apartment, in which she explained, ‘It was called The United States of America versus Billie Holiday, and that’s just the way it felt.’
Watch the trailer above and keep an eye out for the film dropping on Hulu on February 26.
