People say that LA is fake and doesn’t have culture, but all of Valerie’s work is meant to disprove that. Her photos of Los Angeles show you a city that you don’t see on your walk to get coffee from Intelligentsia.
From lowrider events to outings with her friends, Valerie has documented her life and the places she goes to with intimacy. Even in black and white, her version of Los Angeles has more to offer than any gentrified city block.
We visited her in Long Beach to ask about her process, her inspirations and her surroundings, but we couldn’t help from going deeper. We talked about the existential thing in photography, you know, the thing that makes us look at her work as documents of people’s lives — little pieces of time packed neatly into boxes arranged in her closet.
