Thom Yorke has never been one to shy away from sharing his eclectic music taste with fans.
Yorke’s latest venture into the world of playlists comes as part of Sonos Radio’s recent expansion. The online streaming platform has extended its list of radio stations to a whopping 60,000, enlisting a wide range of artists and labels to contribute playlists to the new stations. Yorke joins David Byrne, Soccer Mommy and Jack White’s Third Man Records in offering up a selection of their favourite songs for Sonos listeners, describing his radio station as featuring music that, ‘fascinates or moves me, what obsesses me, challenges me, opens new doors, reminds me of what I might have forgotten, is insanely complex or elegantly simple, violent, messy, heavy or light. Whatever has hit me over the head, basically.’
Following on from last month’s playlist—the two and a half hour In The Absence Thereof…v1 that featured Duke Ellington, James Blake, Thee Oh Sees, Little Simz and more—Yorke returns this week with his second eclectic mix.
In The Absence Thereof…v2 is shorter than the first, clocking in at one and a half hours, but is still chock full of musical goodness showcasing some of Yorke’s biggest influences. As you’d expect from a man who claims ghosts made him cut his hair during the recoding of OK Computer, the selection of artists isn’t anything you could have predicted. You get crooner Frank Sinatra, rapper Rico Nasty, former Sonic Youth member Kim Gordon, and late Icelandic composer Johann Johannsson all sharing the same space on the 20-song playlist.
