‘The Sound Of Metal’ Is This Year’s ‘Whiplash’

If the early reviews are anything to go by, music drama Sound Of Metal is shaping up as one of the must-watch films of 2020.

Written and directed by Darius Marder (writer of The Place Beyond The Pines), the Amazon Prime exclusive stars rising British actor (and personal favourite) Riz Ahmed as punk drummer Ruben Stone. Together with his girlfriend Lou (Olivia Cooke), the duo performs under the alias of Backgammon and dream of making it big in the punk scene. Stone’s life begins to unravel, though, when he loses his sense of hearing and must come to terms with his music career ending prematurely. The official synopsis reads:

During a series of adrenaline-fuelled one-night gigs, itinerant punk-metal drummer Ruben begins to experience intermittent hearing loss. When a specialist tells him his condition will rapidly worsen, he thinks his music career – and with it, his life – is over. His bandmate and girlfriend Lou (Olivia Cooke) checks the recovering heroin addict into a secluded sober house for the deaf in hopes it will prevent relapse and help him learn to adapt to his new situation. But after being welcomed into a community that accepts him just as he is, Ruben has to choose between his equilibrium and the drive to reclaim the life he once knew.

If the trailer is anything to go by, Sound Of Metal is this year’s Whiplash. Ahmed has fast become one of the best young actors in the world and seems to have put in another commanding performance that’s sure to garner him a nomination come Oscar time. Not only are the performances of Ahmed and Cooke inspiring, but director Marder has also introduced innovative sound design techniques and the use of captions throughout the film to convey Stone’s hearing loss.

Sound Of Metal arrives on Amazon Prime December 4.
