The much-rumoured sequel to 90’s cult classic The Big Lebowski is finally set to see the light of day next month.
The Jesus Rolls finds John Turturro returning as the purple-clad, ten pin bowling sex offender Jesus Quintana in a film that’s both a remake of the 1974 French flick Going Places and a spin-off of the Cohen brothers The Big Lebowski.
Written and directed by Turturro, the film follows Quintana, who’s just been released from prison. Reuniting with good friend Petey (Bobby Cannavale) and possible love interest Marie (Audrey Tautou), the trio get involved with a gun-totting hairdresser and embark on a journey of crime, love and friendship.
‘It feels like a good time to release a transgressive film about the stupidity of men who try and fail and try better to understand and penetrate the mystery of women,’ Turturro said when discussing the film last year.
While the official teaser doesn’t give much away—besides proof Quintana still enjoys licking his balls—there’s another longer trailer floating around on the Internet with lots of unseen footage dubbed in Italian. Why Italian? Well, the film debuted at the Rome Film Festival in October last year ahead of its official release this March. The additional footage in the European trailer shows Quintana and Petey bowling and dancing at the local bowling centre. It also introduces Tautou’s Marie into the equation and features cameos from Christopher Walken, Susan Sarandon and John Hamm.
As I don’t speak Italian I’m not quite sure what’s going on, but it appears Turturro, Cannavale and Tautou get mixed up in some criminal escapades involving an angry Hamm that will no doubt result in a few laughs.
The absence of Jeff Bridges’ The Dude is disappointing, but considering the Cohen brothers gave Turturro their blessing to move forward with this unofficial sequel, we believe The Dude abides.
The Jesus Rolls will be in selected cinemas from March 20.
