Taika Waititi’s Making a Comedy Series About Pirates

HBO Max has just greenlit the latest idea given birth to by Taika Waititi’s brain, and in true form, it’s pretty left of centre.

The new series, Our Flag Means Death, will be based on real-life, 18th-century aristocrat turned pirate, Stede Bonnet. Made in collaboration with Garrett Basch (What We Do in the Shadows) and David Jenkins (People of Earth), the series is said to be starting production as soon as Waititi wraps filming on the latest Thor movie.

Not much more is known about the series, except that events will feature loosely around Bonnet’s high seas escapades, after he turned away from life a wealthy landowner to commandeer his own ship and crew (despite having zero sailing experience). He would eventually become known across the seven seas as ‘The Gentleman Pirate,’ even getting in a tussle with the infamous pirate Blackbeard.

How does Waititi keep spewing these brilliant, eccentric ideas out time and time again? You might find some clues in his 2010 Ted Talk on the art of creativity, below.
