Spike Jonze Girl Decks

Hot off the deck press! Girl Skateboards has five new decks available today, featuring early portrait work by co-founder Spike Jonze. Spike grew up in Maryland, won an Oscar, and kept himself fairly busy in-between by completely redefining the art of the music video.

You’ve already seen one, two, or twenty of his music videos, but let’s take a walk down memory lane. In 1994, The Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage video was nominated for Video of the Year, Best Group Video, Breakthrough Video, Best Direction in a Video, and Viewer’s Choice. Aerosmith and R.E.M. were also blowing up the scene and nominations for these same categories resulted in favor of Crying and Everybody Hurts. Someone please, for god’s sake, intervene on this sad-dad rock scene. Lo and behold, Nathaniel Hornblower (a masterful disguise by rapper M.C.A.) bum-rushes the stage and interrupts the R.E.M acceptance speech with his giant, synthetic red beard and obnoxious little hat. Legendary!

Fast-forward twenty two years, and you can now grab a piece of the history. The Beastie Boys are just one of five featured artists for this special release which includes Bjork, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, and Karen O. The Spike Jonze Girl Skateboards series goes on sale in board shops worldwide today, March 7th.
