By now, you’ve probably watched Uncut Gems streaming now on Netflix.
The Safdie Brothers tense tale of shady jewellery dealer, Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler), on a race to pay his debts is one of the best films of 2019, in part due to the incredible performances by Sandler and a supporting cast of characters that included Julia Fox (in her debut role), Lakeith Stanfield, Idina Menzel, Eric Bogosian, and NBA legend Kevin Garnett.
Set in New York City’s Diamond District, the film oozes authenticity from start to finish, and this new clip from Netflix reveals why. The video above tells the real life stories behind the Safdie’s extensive cast of first time actors, plucked straight from the city’s streets and onto the Uncut Gems film set. From Ratner’s son (who was discovered by casting scouts messing around out the front of his family’s jewellery shop in Midtown) to the heavyset enforcer Phil, a Brooklyn-born carpenter and first-time actor, who was spotted by the film’s casting director at a New York train station and given a leading role.
