‘One Great Dew Drop’ Saves the World

You’ve probably heard Earth is veering toward the eviction of humanity.

Depending on where you hang your hat, this calamitous expulsion could be fiery or sodden. Either way, if things continue unabated, we’re fucked. Luckily, there are people out there working tirelessly to save us and our home planet. While no longer lone voices in a vast unregulated industrial wasteland, they still need—and deserve—as much support as we can give them. That’s why twenty of my outdoor-centric photographer friends and I came together to produce a special high-end ‘zine to raise money for 1% for the Planet.

Founded in 2002 by Patagonia’s Yvon Chouinard and Craig Matthews of Blue Ribbon Flies, 1% for the Planet works with both brands and individuals to donate 1% of their earnings to carefully vetted planet-focused non-profits on both the local and global level. It’s a model that works – so far over 2,000 members in 45 countries have given more than $225 million to environmental non-profits. We picked 1% not just because of their scale and success level, but because they allow people to make an impact in their own backyard if they choose. Real change has to start locally, all over, and grow together.

We named our ‘zine One Great Dew Drop after John Muir’s quote: ‘When we contemplate the whole globe as one great dewdrop, striped and dotted with continents and islands, flying through space with other stars all singing and shining together as one, the whole universe appears as an infinite storm of beauty.’ OGDD features a cover illustration by Ty Williams housing 76 pages of beautifully printed photographs by a diverse global crew, many of whom you’ve seen featured right here in Monster Children: Krystle Wright, Keith Ladzinski, Jeremy Koreski, Taylor Rees, Nick LaVecchia, Jeremiah Watt, Ultraromance, Anna Ehrgott, Arielle Thomas, Joe Grant, Jenny Sathngam, Jen Dagdagan, James Joiner, Joe Klementovich, Josh Huckaby, Sam Horine, Lauren Danilek, Tenzin Namdol, Whitney Tressel, John Montesi, and Gabe Bornstein. Thanks to the generous support of 1% for the Planet member Bandit Wines, 100% of the proceeds from sale of these ‘zines goes directly to 1% and their work saving the planet. Is this the perfect holiday gift? I mean, obviously. But also you should get one for yourself. Who doesn’t love being inspired by amazing photographs, for a great cause even?
