Photos by Jamie Green
You might remember the winning Boost Mobile Travel shot for our 2019 MC Photo Comp.
Taken by Byron Bay-based photographer Jamie Green, the sun-drenched shot of sunbakers on a pebbly Italian beach was immediately flagged as a frontrunner, ultimately taking out first place and winning $5K large at our Photo Annual party. Taking a further dive into Jamie’s work reveals more of the same—beautiful people in beautiful places, in scenes that wouldn’t look out of place in a Slim Aarons book. We caught up with Jamie in between his travels as a fashion photographer to find out more about his winning photo and running into Andrè 3000, sans camera.
Can you tell us a little more about the story behind your winning photo?
It was in a place called Puglia in Italy, summer of 2019. I had been taking these types of photos with crowds on beaches, getting inspiration from the likes of Slim Aarons. We arrived at an Airbnb hanging over this beach full of people with bright colours, so I sent my wife down in white to sit in amongst them and shot it on a 200mm lens.
How do you plan to spend your prize money?
Well, I gave my sister $1000 for Xmas, and I think I’ll get a new laptop with the rest. But I don’t know, I got this super big cheque but no bank will take it. I think it might be fake?
What are you shooting at the moment?
Mostly fashion campaigns, I just got back from NZ, then I head to Abu Dhabi next week and then to the USA in Feb.
A moment you regret not having your camera on you?
Good question… I actually walked past Andrè 3000 last year and really wish I had a film camera at the time to ask him for a snap.
Which of your photos would you save from a burning building?
I think most my photos are on hard drives so I guess I’d grab them all.
If you could steal talent from a photographer you admire, who and what would it be?
Probably to be able to connect with models as well as Brydie Mack does.
What do you like to do when you’re not shooting photos?
Any plans for 2020 that include your camera?
I’m going to go to film school this year, so, hopefully, start to get into movies and TV stuff.
