Interview: The Pickle Artist


My mate Griffo is the artist creating the big brouhaha with that ‘Pickle’ thing.

Basically, what he did was yank a pickle out of a Mcdonald’s cheeseburger and stuck it to the ceiling at Auckland’s Michael Lett Gallery. Then he called it ‘Pickle’, and put a $10,000 price tag on it (the purchaser of the work will have to pay an additional $4.44 for the cheeseburger). Everyone is losing their minds and saying he’s either a genius or an idiot. I’m here to tell you he is both, but mostly the second one.

Ketchup: Water, Tomato Paste, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Corn Syrup, Distilled Vinegar, Salt, Natural Flavour (Soybean Oil). Pickles: Gherkins, Water, Acidity Regulator,(260), Salt, Flavour, Firming Agent (509), Preservative (211). Onion: Water, Dehydrated White Onions. Mustard: Water, Distilled Vinegar, Mustard Seed, Salt, Colour (100), Paprika, Natural Flavouring. Beef Patty Seasoning: Salt, Pepper, and Sunflower Oil.

So, to get the lowdown on Griffo’s latest ‘provocative’ work (piss-take) I texted Griffo today for an interview:

I’m working, bro.

Ordinarily, he doesn’t shut up. But now, when I actually want to hear him waffle on about his art, he’s gone quiet. Typical. Anyways, watch this space. He might crack, but I doubt it.
