A Joey Ramone biopic is in the works, and it’s just been announced that Pete Davidson scored the role of the infamous frontman.
The film—based on Mickey Leigh’s memoir I Slept with Joey Ramone—is being produced by Netflix and STXfilms. ‘Mickey Leigh not only collaborated with his big brother’s band – he has irreplaceable memories of and insights into Joey Ramone, having supported him when no one else would and witnessed him overcome adversity in the most dramatic way,’ said STXfilms’s chairman Adam Fogelson. ‘I Slept with Joey Ramone is a great rock anthem that will make an equally great rock biopic, set apart by a universal story of family.’
The good news is that the film is being made in cooperation with the Estate of Joey Ramone, which hopefully means unfiltered access to those who knew the Ramones frontman best. No word yet on the intended release date, but if you want to know more about one of the most unlikely music icons of the seventies and eighties, you can read his big brother’s account in I Slept With Joey Ramone in the meantime.
