FORMER: Austyn and Jake Take Audible Refuge

The new FORMER vid Audible Refuge is amazing and if you haven’t seen it (where have you been?) that’s it above.

Our very own Andrew Peters was along for the ride to capture stills during the shooting of the vid, and he’s put together a rad little DIY zine featuring pics from the various trips and Q/As with Austyn, Jake, filmmaker Geoff Brown, and his good self. It’s called Friendly Reminder, and you can print out and staple up your own copy of the zine HERE. Finally, way down the bottom, there’s a gallery of Andrew’ favs. Check it out.

AUSTYN GILLETTE

One trick that got away:

There were a couple of things in Florida that got away, but we’ll leave those there for the foreseeable future.

Trick you wished you didn’t try or didn’t film:

This whole project was very unplanned, so no regrets on what we did or didn’t film!

Favourite meal:

Versaille Cuban restaurant in Miami was pretty memorable for us all

Worst meal:

Most of the to-go orders didn’t really knock our socks off. Travelling at unpredictable hours call for unpredictable meals.

Favourite beverage from the trip:

Every bottle of wine consumed.

Worst beverage from the trip:

Most things at the airport.

Favourite thing about American Airlines:

That it’s a tad better than Spirit Airlines or Easy Jet. Other than that, they get one star out of ten.

If we could have gone to one other city, where?

Maine would be a great place to visit, but don’t know how much skating could go on there.

Person you wish we could take on every trip:

Craig Andersøn is always our best TM when he’s around, so I’d go with him.

Were these your first trips since Covid?

All of this was filmed during the reopening of travel in the US, so this was the first for all of us. Very bizarre experience seeing how each state was actually handling their protocols.

Worst DJ or song played on the trip.

Jake can be a good DJ, but hearing Instagram playing in the background makes anyone the worst DJ. Final answer. Ha-ha.

I really can’t remember, but the Arthur Russell song that we ended up using popped up on our first trip to Miami, so I’d go with that one. Happened very naturally.

One thing you miss the most when you’re on the road

I miss not wearing a mask on a plane. It’s a pretty uncomfortable thing to sit through.

How were these different from other Former trips?

We wanted this project to have more sections, rather than the traditional video part formula that we have done in the past. I think it makes it more fun for everyone and you tend to film more spontaneously.

Funniest anecdote from the trip:

We found out our neighbor in Atlanta made to go mix drinks for people and also did live dancing on the balcony, so that made for an entertaining stay. Hope it’s still in business.
