Fender has announced the launch of a very special guitar: the Kurt Cobain Jag-Stang.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Nirvana’s breakout album, Nevermind, the signature
Jag-Stang guitar is a reissue of Kurt’s own custom model, a guitar he designed by fusing his favourite elements of the Fender Jaguar with those of the Fender Mustang. Using detailed sketches Cobain drew in his diary, Fender was able to create the one-off dream guitar for Kurt in 1993, and now they’ve brought it back to life for this 2021 revival.
The Jag-Stang is built to Cobain’s meticulous specifications, using vintage-style, single-coil and custom humbucking pickups, a 24″ scale length that gives the guitar a feel and playability that is characteristic of the Mustang guitar—which Kurt preferred—and of course, the iconic body shape. I had a ’67 Mustang back in 2004, but I had to sell it to buy food. And weed. And also beer. I miss that guitar and wish I had something to fill the Mustang shaped hole it left in my heart. Sigh. But back to the new Jag-Stang.
Available in both right and left-handed models to honour the legendary lefty player himself, the Kurt Cobain Jag-Stang fits all of his playing preferences for those looking to emulate his iconic stage style. ‘Ever since I started playing, I’ve always liked certain things about certain guitars but could never find the perfect mix of everything I was looking for,’ said the late Kurt Cobain in a 1994 Fender Frontline interview. ‘The Jag-Stang is the closest thing I know.’ Cobain played Mustangs and Jaguars during his time, but it was the Jag-Stang that came to the fore on the classic album In Utero and its subsequent world tour.
The Kurt Cobain Jag-Stang comes in Fiesta Red and Sonic Blue finishes and all the specs on the new Jag-Stang are as they were in Kurt’s original model: an alder body, 24” short scale length, 7.25” and radius rosewood fingerboard; vintage-style single-coil and custom humbucking pickups; and Mustang guitar slider switches with four distinct settings set to replicate Kurt’s punchy guitar sounds. God damn, if you don’t need this guitar. Click here for more info.
