Erik Ellington Reveals His Collab With Li-Ning

Erik Ellington put designing on ice for a minute but he’s back in a big way, partnering with Li-Ning to launch their first-ever skateboarding line.

Announcing the news on Instagram, Ellington revealed the Li-Ning x Erik Ellington Signature Model in three colourways, inspired by vintage basketball shoes that he grew up wearing. ‘The tongue flap is an homage to the double tongues we used to rock on our shoes in the mid-90s,’ Ellington said. ‘With this design, we explored new material combinations that have never made their way onto a skate shoe before, like the ripstop toe-cage and sealed double tongue flap.’

Ellington spoke more on the design process, saying that he took inspiration from his past designs to create a ‘futuristic skate shoe’. ‘The best style is always effortless,’ he said. ‘Skaters I grew up idolising, like Tom Penny, Keenan Milton, Mark Gonzales, and Kareem Campbell didn’t try hard to look cool, they just did. When I approached the Li-Ning x Ellington, I looked back at the sneakers I designed in the past and merged key elements to creating a futuristic skate shoe.’

Li-Ning and Ellington also have plans for an apparel range, but that’s all the info we’ve got for you at this stage. Most importantly, though—how do you get your hands on these things? Li-Ning will be releasing the Erik Ellington Signature Model on July 22 via KCDC, Andrew Downtown, Black Sheep, Kingswell and Humidity in the United States, and globally on July 30 through Ssense and Luisa Via Roma.
