Danny Trejo is arguably the most famous that guy in movie history.
Appearing in over 300 films and television shows with his tattoos and menacing scowl, he’s the archetype Hollywood tough guy. It’s a role he’s made his own in a film career spanning 35 incredible years, but there’s much more to Trejo than his on-screen persona lets on.
A former prison inmate and boxing champion, Trejo is also a drug counselor and restaurateur. Over the past five years he’s combined his passion for food with his eye for business to open seven taquerias, a donut shop, and a coffee shop in his hometown, Los Angeles. With a love for food that harks back to his childhood, Trejo has finally decided to share his culinary knowledge with the release of his first cookbook, Trejo’s Tacos: Recipes and Stories from LA.
The colourful tome includes 75 taco recipes, all of which handed down from his mother and grandmother, and include how to make vegan cauliflower tacos, traditional Mexican carnitas, cinnamon sugar low rider donuts, and the famous carnitas tacos guacamole, which Trejo claims is ‘the best taco in the world right now.’
Not only does Trejo’s Tacos act as a cookbook with easy to follow recipes and healthy options, but it’s also a memoir of Trejo’s life, detailing his experiences growing up in LA, the city’s food culture and how it influenced him. Trejo writes about cooking with his mother, how prison led to his acting career, and also includes a map of his favourite restaurants and hangouts in LA. You can pick up an autographed copy of the book from Trejo’s Tacos or find a copy at your local bookstore.
