Lola Mignot

Lola Mignot is from the village of Sayulita on the gorgeous Pacific Coast of Mexico.

There she surfs, suns and basically lives the dream (if your dream is waking up on the Pacific Coast of Mexico every day and surfing). But that’s not to say Lola lives a sedentary life. She’s been travelling the globe since she was knee-high to a grasshopper, visiting with various other Mignots (they’re everywhere) and chasing waves along the way. She’s moved about so much, in fact, she feels more a citizen of the planet than of the town she and her family made famous. We found out more about the Vans team rider’s first-ever surfboard model (coming soon) and how many languages she can roast us in (three).

How do you think growing up in Mexico has influenced you today?
Mexico is my home, my heart. Growing up in Mexico, in a tight community close to the ocean, has brought me to where I am now. The ocean has been my playground since I was a little girl. I can call Sayulita my home forever, but I also spent a lot of my time travelling to visit family members all over the world during my childhood. Because of this, I was exposed to many different cultures at a young age and had a sense of home in many places across the globe. I think this has contributed to why I feel so comfortable in so many parts of the world now.

What’s the very first thing you do when you wake up?
I have a cup of coffee or two, look at the waves, and head out for a surf—followed by a breakfast feast.

Mexico is my home, my heart. Growing up in Mexico, in a tight community close to the ocean, has brought me to where I am now.

What first got you into surfing?
The people in my town, my family, my brother.

What’s one thing you’ve made or a project you’ve been part of that you’re most proud of?
My first video when I was 14 years old, made by Ed Fladung, is something I’m so proud of to this day. That’s one of the videos that brought me out into the surfing world and something that I can look back at that will always make me happy. Being a part of the Vans family now is something that I know 14-year-old me would be proud of. I’ve had the honour of working with them on many projects such as Cadavre Exquis, working with so many talented women whom I can now call my family.

Favourite board in your quiver right now and why?
La Lola. I’ve been working with Dane Peterson at Unhinged Surfboards to create my first surfboard model. It is super exciting to be a part of the board-making process, learning all the ins and outs, and applying my knowledge as a lifetime surfer to create my dream board that I can share with the rest of the world.

What was the last thing you read, saw, or listened to that inspired you?
Honestly, I don’t even know what to say. I’ve seen so much and heard so much this year. Life is a tomato right off the branch.

Another talent people might not know about you have?
I’m trilingual. I can roast you in Spanish, French, and English.

What’s the one place you’re most keen to travel to post-Covid and why?
Everywhere and anywhere, I have family spread out in so many different places. I want to connect with different cultures. I want to spend time enjoying food with my family. I’m in search of a new place to call home. I want to spend some time exploring the parts of Europe I haven’t yet seen.

What does the world need more of in 2022?
Tolerance, patience, care for others, and hugs and naps on the beach.
