The Avalanches have just released the new track ‘Interstellar Love’ and, if I had to guess, we’ll be hearing this all summer.
Which is cool with me—it’s an amazing song. I can’t remember the last time there was a summer anthem I agreed with. Wait, yes I can: Missy Elliot’s ‘Get Your Freak On’ in the Summer of 2001. I was living on Nassau Ave in Greenpoint at the time, and everyone was blasting that out the windows of their cars from 6 AM to 1 AM. Which was fine with me. But I digress (‘Digressions, incontestably, are the sunshine;—they are the life, the soul of reading.’—Laurence Sterne), this new one from The Avalanches is rad and features the smooth-as-butter vocal stylings of one Todd Michael ‘Leon’ Bridges.
‘Leon is an incredible singer,’ says Avalanche Robbie Chatter, ‘with the just the most beautiful voice. He’s from Texas but we both happened to be in LA at the same time, which was lucky as he was on my all-time wish list. When we were in the studio, I told him the story about Ann Druyan and Carl Sagan and how her love-struck brainwaves were sent out into space on the Voyager’s Golden Record. And this song came out of that.’
‘Interstellar Love’ is taken from The Avalanches forthcoming album We Will Always Love You, out December 11, but the limited edition Grant Spanier x The Avalanches photo book is available now on the band store HERE.
