Watch: The Last With Pool Girl

Sometimes a project goes so smoothly, you start to genuinely, honestly, start believing this whole life thing is going to start working out.

Even when all the wretched voices in the back of your head are telling you otherwise at the start. You know them, the voices. They’re the ones that say things like you should maybe know more than just, like, sixty per cent of your way around a professional video editing software before saying yes to certain things. Or that skipping out on a full day of work to do it all without really notifying your manager beforehand, maybe, isn’t the best idea. And that you’re not actually not only not special for, but also not the only person, holding a Sony Handycam and some microphones at Echo Park Lake on a Thursday afternoon.

But then you have someone like Allie Nixon start talking a few seconds after you hit record, and you go, “Oh, everything is going to be totally fine.” It makes sense, though. Especially if you’ve heard Allie, better known as Pool Girl’s music.

An artist, producer, songwriter, and all those other brilliantly multifaceted creative-adjacent titles, Allie’s been a staple of both the Los Angeles and greater indie scene for a minute now. Her mesmerisingly lo-fi retro synth sound, paired with shimmering vocals and dreamy guitars, always being the perfect listen has certainly helped with that. And her presence is right in tune with it, too.

To do my best to avoid cliche by creating an original situation for a not-so-original comparison, Pool Girl’s music feels like that first truly summer day spent on the sand somewhere where the water’s warm enough just for boardies, the surf’s just playful enough to be inspiring, and there’s a full cooler by the big towel setup you put together with four-to-fie of your closest friends. It’s relaxing, inviting, and you just can’t help but really love everything about it. In short, it’s the sort of thing you listen to and think, “Well, this is really quite nice, isn’t it?”

Here’s a bit more background, though, before you press play above and get the more candid breakdown above. Allie first made her mark in mark with her band Little Jet in 2022. But it’s as Pool Girl where she’s really taken off. Since the release of her debut EP, Trophy Wife, Allie’s captured, by the numbers, over 230K monthly listeners, two million streams, acclaim from tastemakers like Wonderland and COLORS, and plenty of playlist features.

She’s recently been headlining the always-perfect Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles and has shows coming up in New York City as well. Her latest single, “June,” also recently dropped, which is a beautiful number about letting something real unfold naturally. There’s also a new EP on the way later this summer, but you’ll just have to stay up-to-date with Allie so you don’t miss it.

I couldn’t think of a better person I’d want to feature in the follow-up to Monster Children’s The Last series. You know, The Last? The one where we ask people about the last time they sort of did, well, anything? Exactly. So, with the last sentence of this intro, let’s just say hit play and have Pool Girl take it away.
