Filmmaker, skater, actor, English teacher, world traveler: Rachelle (not Rachel) Vinberg is a bit of polymath.
New York-based (though spending a fair amount of time all over) came up through the city’s skate scene as a founding member of the all-women Skate Kitchen collective. Her real-life experiences became the foundation for Crystal Moselle’s Skate Kitchen, where Vinberg played a fictionalized version of herself, before returning as Camille in HBO’s Betty. There’s an understated authenticity to Vinberg’s presence on screen; less like a traditional actor and more like someone simply letting the camera into her world. Rachelle’s mix of skating, filmmaking, and naturalistic performance has made her a distinctive figure in the overlap between New York skate culture and independent cinema.
Lately, Rachelle has been skating more and balling just as much, so we met up on the court in Ridgewood before taking a stroll through Queens and having a peek into the coolest Zero duffel we’ve ever seen, thanks to our good friends over at Wyld.
