Last week, the Young Henrys skate team jumped in the Volcom van and set out on a three-day, east-coast skate mission: The Road to Marketta.

They went from Sydney to Marketta, stopping in Newcastle, Port Macquarie, Byron Bay, and various towns along the way. They skated, drank beer and, we’re assuming, ate several pies because that’s what you do on an Aussie road trip, delete pies. In the van was QLD State Champion Aimee Massie, Young Henrys’ newest recruits: Lenard ‘Lenny’ Tejada, Kai Shimakage, and George Richards, AND Australian Skater of the Year Rob Pace, who we hit up with some questions about the trip

George Richards

How was the trip?

The trip was amazing! Such good times. Huge amount of skating, and the perfect amount of cold beers.

Who won Best & Fairest?

Would have to give it to Kai.

Why?

Great skating, but most of all the dude copped some shit on the trip. New hair cut, accidentally performed the worlds best scorpion, and a few too many beers. Had to sit next to me in the van.

Who won the opposite of Best & Fairest?

Clint!

How come?

He drove a few kms too slow and forgot to charge the speaker.

Best spot?

We stopped at a bunch of skateparks, but Stockton was probably my favourite. It has a bunch of sick ledges and rails, and the worlds best mini ramp.

Who did the best trick?

George was super entertaining to watch skate, since I could never do what he does. He did a front blunt on the Sydney city park vert quarter. That looked very satisfying.

Which town was the tidiest town?

Byron Bay pit stop was super sick, plus the pub we partied at was next door to the skatepark!

Who had the smelliest feet?

Kai. One-hundred-percent.

Best Pie?

Didn’t eat a pie… Not very Aussie of me.

Best day?

Byron bay pit stop! A bunch of skating, pub feed, live music, and Couch Wizard closing it all out.

Who played the best jams in the van?

I was DJ for most of the trip—I killed it!

Best moment?

Kai asked me to film him bombing a grass hill as fast as he could. He ended up hitting a hole at the bottom and performing one of the best scorpions I’ve ever seen. Also got the pleasure of filming the stunt.

Silliest moment?

Played The Odds Game for most of the van trip. It’s a game where you challenge someone to a dare you come up with. If you win, you get to watch them do some dumb shit that brings a lot of entertainment to the van.

Who told the most lies?

Kai would like to lie about his half-finished beers

Approximately how many beers were had by the team during the trip?

Would have to say close to 500. Ha-ha-ha!

Of those beers, which one was your favourite?

The new YH ginger beer is amazing. Something worth fighting to the death for.

Finally, any shout-outs?

Shout out to Lenard for somehow consuming 100 beers by himself on the final night. Get this man a trophy.
