Surf And Turf

Gardening and surfing are more alike than you might first think.

Both require the use of your hands, are grounded in nature (geddit), and give you back more than you put in. Planting seeds into the ground that you can then eat is basically the same as going out for a surf when you’re pissed off and coming back out less inclined to headbutt the mazda that cut you off in the carpark- each making the planet a better place in the process. Naturally the two are bought together in Patagonia’s latest film Farm Boys. The first hardcore surfing and gardening show featuring conservationists/ surfers Heath Joske, Addy Jones, Dave Rastovich, Anna Taylor and Tim Jones.

You may know the filmer Harry Triglone from Fun Boys Entertainment Systems - the lo-fi cult surf channel to counteract corporate surf content. Well he also happens to work in bush regeneration so this was a natural merging of passions for him too. The six part series will follow the network of surfing friends as they make a life of growing their own food in their backyards in the hope that maybe the rest of us surfers, gardeners and humans think hey, I can do that too.

Episode 1: ‘Junk Wizards’ will be free to watch online on Patagonia’s Roaring Journals in August, with new episodes dropping weekly. Or catch the film in person Join Patagonia for a special premiere event, hosted by Heath Joske, Addy Jones and Dave Rastovich on Thursday July, 27, 6:15pm at the Byron Community Centre: 69 Jonson Street, Byron Bay, Bundjalung Country. Tickets are free but limited so please register here.
