A Quick One WIth Summer Richley

All Imagery By The Good Homie, Cole Walton

Our good mate Cole Walton hit me up recently to let me know he’d been working a new film with Summer Richley - Spanish Death.

Cole is an absolute gun when it comes to the productivity and the hustle you need to get shit done. He’s always working on multiple edits with a great eye and a way of surrounding himself with talented and interesting people. It takes the work of many to create anything but it can also just be one person that drives and rallies an entire scene together to push it all to its potential, that is Cole Walton right now. He employed that attitude at the end of a trip to Spain with Summer Richley and they walked away with another one for the books. Enough about Cole, we’ll be hearing much more from him soon, here is Summer!

Where are you right now?

I’m in the North island of New Zealand. I was over in Australia for like a month and then I went to the South Island for the single fin mingle contest and then I came up here to do the west end wiggle contest.

How’d you go?

I won that one.

Fuck yeah, congratulations.

Thank you. That was pretty sweet cause I did pretty shitty in all the other ones.

What is your favourite town in New Zealand?

On the South Island , Sumner was pretty sweet. Fun waves and the all the locals were very friendly. On the North Island, Omaha was a blast. Lots of fishing and surfing.

Have you worked on video projects with Cole before this one?

Yeah, just Teaparty with Cami Loker. This one was pretty last minute. When we were in Spain, we were surfing and he was like, “alright, you know what, tomorrow we’re gonna start filming and we’re gonna make a video”. I only had 5 days until I was leaving, but we got some footage and he’s been putting it together over the past 6 months or so I think.

So how long did you actually film for it?

I think it was actually only those 4 or 5 days. When we first got to Spain the waves were psycho. The best beach break with no-one out and the weather was perfect. Then the next day when he wanted to start filming the waves turned to shit, but we still got some clips. We made a pretty long intro. He wanted to make it horror themed and I get stabbed.

You’re acting in it?

Yeah, not too much acting. All I had to do was sit in a chair pretending I was reading and then we did a couple of takes of Neil, our French friend, stabbing me in the back with a knife.

Have you got rollerskating clips in there as well?

Yeah, just street stuff cause I didn’t hit any parks in Spain. There’s only a couple of clips in there but I was stoked to actually use my skates. I had brought them over but didn’t use them for the first month and a half but he definitely encouraged me a lot. I was a bit scared.

He seems to be the motivator.

100% we were both happy with some of the skating clips, but he’d keep going back and be like “I think you can do it better” and sure enough, we got better clips.

What were you guys doing in Spain?

Trying to find good waves and drinking the best sangria ever.

How long have you known Cole?

I think I’ve known him for like 7 years, I was about 14 when I met him.

Is there a surf related story behind your parents naming you Summer?

No, I actually don’t know, I think they just liked it. My dad wanted to call me Stephanie and call me Stevie, which I think is cute but my mom was like “hell no”. She wasn’t happy with Stephanie.

Who are your biggest inspirations in the water at the moment?

Growing up around Karina (Rozunko) and Makala (Smith), Lola (Mignot) and Hailey it has been so sick watching them. Erin Ashley is so sick. I actually just got to hang out with her at the single fin mingle, she was a judge there.

What is your next stop after New Zealand?

I think I’m just going to head home, I’ve been away for a few months so I’m ready to head home and make some money again and hopefully head to Indo again next March.  I’m just excited to get back and hopefully the water is a bit warmer than when I left. I’ve heard the rain was brutal out there.

What is your day job?

I’m a florist.

What are your favorite flowers?

Probably dahlias and gerber daisies.
