Who is Connor Lee? According to his tour surfing coach, Stace Galbraith, he’s someone who looks just as comfortable in 2 ft. waves as he does 10 ft., has the kind of natural style that’s purpose-made for the surfboard, and looks great both in the air and inside ‘the local death slabs he tackles regularly.’ Sounds like our kind of guy. Let’s meet him.
My family have always been around the ocean, so I guess I never really had a chance not to surf.
Short-arm, long leg steamer or a long-arm, short leg?
Feel more comfortable with short arms. I like both, but!
Being the offspring of a pro surfer must have its pros and cons. What are they?
It definitely has its pros and cons. I feel you have to surf at a certain level while surfing with my dad… maybe because he surfs good and there are people always watching and expecting a high standard.
Newcastle is known as a hotspot for producing not only talented surfers, but unique styles and individuals like Matt Hoy, Craig Anderson and Mark Richards. What have you guys got in the water up there?
Beer! And Newcastle has always been competitive with lots of good surfers to watch. I think it is just progression and the fact our waves are consistent.
Would you rather: surf pumping Mereweather with only you and your dad out, but he gets wave of the day—or surf pumping Merewether with all the greats, and you have to fade your dad in front of everyone on the wave of the day?
It would be a rare day for me and dad to be surfing Merewether, but if we were, I’d probably rather just the two of us out and dad gets wave of the day.
You’ve got a hell style. Is that something you can work on, or does it just come naturally?
Thanks for that! I think my style is just me, I don’t really try to copy anyone. But Craig, Dane, Steph, and Noa are people I like watching. We do a bit of filming, so I get to tweak a few things here and there when it comes to style.
Big stalefish air reverse or an even bigger straight slob?
I would prefer a slob over a stalefish.
What is the chance of you cutting that mop of hair in isolation?
I cut the mop pre-pandemic. My hair looks a bit too pretty now; I may have to go back to the Romper Stomper Russell Crowe look.
Oh and this kid is cookin’ up something really special. Check the teaser below then follow him on the gram so keep poster, as they say.
