It’s officially beer season.
Oh, you thought it was already beer season? No, no, no. Beer season just started, and we’ve got a new watering hole to help wet your whistle as the temperate climbs. Newtown’s South King Recreation Club has all the hallmarks of a classic Aussie club—ice-cold frothys, frozen chook raffles, cheap schnittys, beer garden, and great music—offerings that have been sorely missed in a city where every second pub is owned by someone whose name rhymes with ‘Lustin’ Lemmes’.
At South King Rec, every weekday from 5-7pm will be happy hour, with $10 cocktails that include normal cocktails (like Mezcal Grapefruit Palomas) and not-so-normal ones (like Bourbon Peanut Butter and Jelly Milkshakes). There’ll be $5 craft tinnies and tap from breweries like Young Henry’s and Hawke’s (RIP) Brewing Co, and delicious wine. On Wednesday it’s $12 schnitzels, a meat tray raffle and badge draw; and on Thursdays, it’s $12 burgers, Wheel of Fortune and DJ’s spinning vinyl ’til the wee hours.
The doors of South King Recreation Club are now officially open, and as you can see from their opening night, the crowds are flocking. Go check it out at Level 1, 597 King Street Newtown.
