THE GOOD TRIP: Sean Newport

Photos by Ryan Allan, film by Han-Su Kim. Additional filming by Grant Schubert.

We’re hitting the road with our friends at goodbrands—purveyors of damn good weed—this summer to feature some of our favorite creative people around California and throw a few epic parties. Come hang, be in good company, and see what these cities are all about. Next up: San Francisco with Sean Newport.

Primarily a woodworker, Sean Newport creates a digital aesthetic through an analog process. Sean manipulates wood into three-dimensional shapes, then paints and arranges them in ways that allow patterns to emerge from unique geometric designs.

“LA is great. But as a 22 year old dude, I didn’t have anything to offer and I didn’t feel comfortable there to do the things that I felt more comfortable to do [in San Francisco]. I moved here to not be cool.”

“Repetition is everywhere, but when we see it on a wall for art our brains want to identify with it, but also be drawn into it.”

“We wanted to build community and we wanted to do creative stuff. We had roommates that were all tapped into different things, so we started throwing shows in the basement. The Growlers played a secret show, Ty Segall, White Fence, Strange Boys. It was just a really cool little moment.”

“I don’t know if I could be doing what I’m doing now if I didn’t have access to this warehouse.”

“I think happy accidents are the best parts of anything. I think those are the things that create the intent.”

Good music, good people, good times. Learn more about The Good Trip here, and stay tuned for more events all summer long.
