It’s been 4,756 days since I heard a new Tool song.
It should have been 4,757, but I was working at JB-HiFi at the time of the band’s 2006 release, 10,000 Days. It was strictly embargoed until May 2, sealed in a box out in the back room. Red Eye Records had planned a midnight listening party, and there was a feverish excitement in the air.
Word on the street was that if another music retail outlet broke the embargo first, we were allowed to follow suit without any legal ramifications. Word came in quick that Sanity was blaring new Tool from their speakers, so you best believe I broke that puppy out of its seal. Two songs in (about one minute, 42 seconds into Jambi, if I recall correctly) a man in a suit appeared at the counter I was performing an air-drum solo on and asked what we were listening to. Elated, I told him it was the new Tool record that wasn’t supposed to come out until tomorrow. Then he slid his Sony BMG business card across my stand-in drum kit and the speakers went dead.
Cool story, Erin, but when the fuck is the new Tool record coming out? August 30, my fellow disciples! Tool announced the news during intermission at their concert in Birmingham last night, before following up with an official announcement on their socials. At the show, stage screens flashed the date ‘August 30th’, and then Maynard James Keenan came out and said, ‘Alright, everyone, take out your phones, security stand down, and let these fuckers do whatever it is with their phones.’ Usually, mobile phones are not allowed at Tool shows.
That didn’t stop a few fans from capturing two new tracks the band debuted while performing at Welcome To Rockville festival in Jacksonville earlier this week, though. Enjoy live footage of ‘Descending’ and ‘Invincible’ below, and see you all again in 2035.
