This just in: Bing Liu’s hard-hitting 2018 skate documentary has a one-in-five chance of winning a goddamn Oscar.
Minding the Gap was one of just five films nominated in the feature documentary category, a group that includes Nat Geo’s death-defying Free Solo; the intimate community portrait Hale County This Morning, This Evening; rare Islamic State insight Of Fathers and Sons; and biographical ode to Supreme Court Justice and pop-culture icon Ruth Bader Ginsburg, RBG.
Filmed over six years, Minding the Gap follows a group of friends as they deal with family trauma, adolescence and adulthood, mental health, and identity. It was our favourite skate documentary of 2018, and you can read more about it here. Congrats to Bing and the Minding the Gap crew!
