7 New Summer Jams to Put You in a Good Mood

Sure, depressing music is cool and all, but wouldn’t you rather go outside?

In the southern hemisphere right now, temperatures are sizzling, birds are chirping, and the ocean is at primo temp. Time to put the Elliot Smith B-sides away, sadsack. Summertime calls for you to get in a better mood, and pronto. These new January jams are a good place to start.

Little Simz – Selfish feat. Cleo Sol

Little Simz is a 24-year-old hip hop artist from North London with two albums already under her belt. This track, ‘Selfish’, is taken from her upcoming third album, GREY Area, out March 1. Catchiest self-deprecating song I’ve ever heard.

Jungle – Casio

Last year, UK soul collective Jungle dropped one of the best albums of the year with For Ever. ‘Casio’ is another track off the album, released as a single this week accompanied by this incredible one-take video. The dancer is Will West and yes, he’s real.

Cass McCombs – The Great Pixley Train Robbery

Three more weeks till Cass McComb’s drops his highly anticipated new album, Tip of the Sphere, praise the lawd! And judging by the singles he’s released off of it so far, it’s set to be more than a worthy follow up to 2016’s seminal Mangy Love. Also, Westerns are chill.

Neal Francis – These Are The Days

30-year-old Chicago-based musician Neal Francis has a pretty colourful life story. Touring with Muddy Waters’ son at 18, joining and then being booted out of a popular funk band at 25, and then suffering an alcohol-induced seizure that forced him to get clean a few years ago. Rough trot, but if Happy Days ever got a reboot, this’d be the new theme song.

Mdou Moctar – Kamane Tarhanin

Guitarist and songwriter Mdou Moctar was born in a small village in Niger. The story goes he made his first guitar out of wood and learned to play in secret because secular music was banned in his religious village. Fast forward to 2019 and Moctar is releasing his first album recorded in a proper studio, titled Ilana (The Creator), out March 29th.

Pond – Daisy

Perth’s most prolific band, Pond, drop their eighth album on March 1. Titled Tasmania, it’s produced and mixed by the band and Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker. ‘Daisy’ is the first single from the upcoming album, and it’s six minutes and 21 seconds of spectacular.

Jai Wolf – Lose My Mind feat. Mr Gabriel

Jai Wolf (born Sajeeb Saha) is a New York-based electronic producer who has just announced his debut full-length album, The Cure To Loneliness, out Friday, April 5. Part Pheonix, part Strokes, this one’s a solid summer vibe.
