Back to the Feature – Kevin “Spanky” Long

Recreating an iconic Natas photo by Spike Jonze… How hard can it be?

We definitely didn’t really think this through. This wasn’t fair at all. We were never going to be able to recreate this Natas x Spike Jonze combo—they are one of the greatest creative duos in the history of skateboarding. We got tips from Natas before we went to the spot and he told us, “You’ve gotta use the rhythm,” but I don’t think it was rhythm-approved in the end. The photo was definitely not a Spike Jonze picture.

Natas laughed when we told him about Kevin having a bit more trouble getting up on the pylon than expected. He agreed it wasn’t quite a fair match up. Spike said that it was, “No way! So sick! I love that,” in a text message to the editor, but he must have been sarcastic.

Basically, this isn’t the essence of progression. This is like a butcher shop. We really tried. All I can really say is sorry to Natas and Spike. Thanks Kevin for being such a good sport. If we ever have to do this again we gotta pick something that is gonna make us look a little better.
