Killing Time with Unknown Mortal Orchestra

Some of our favourite New Zealand exports, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, were on our side of the Tasman recently, so we decided to hit up frontman Ruban Nielson for a game of pool.

In addition to being the band’s singer, Nielson’s the band’s talented guitarist and songwriter who cut his teeth in punk band Mint Chicks. The guys have released a collection of stellar records over the past few years, the most recent being soulful 2018 album Sex & Food. We caught up with Nielson for a game of stick at the Cricketers Arms to chat life in Portland, working with his brothers and how he stumbled into his musical career—just hit play above.
