What went down when MC tagged along with adidas Skateboarding to Shanghai.
Our first trip to China, will we get let in? We have a lot of camera gear and we know the rules around foreign media. We land to an empty customs line, blue skies and baggage intact. So far so good. We arrive at the hotel, dump bags for boards and roll through the city to get our bearings. It’s surprisingly quiet and really clean; not what we were expecting.
We catch up with Rodrigo TX, Lucas Puig, Dennis Durrant, Nestor Judkins, Benny Fairfax and Brian Peacock who are warming up at the plaza near the hotel. It’s a business centre that’s somehow agreed to draw a line in the tiles and allow skaters to roam free on the right-hand side of the building, which boasts ankle-to-waist high ledges, a knee high hubba and really fucking good bagel shop that sells takeaway beers. Win.
The next few days, we use the previous routine as the format for the day. Wake up, breakfast, plaza, bagel, skate a spot, then head back for beers and whatever the evening’s events had in store for us. Which included the Adidas x Hélas Launch Party, team signing at the adidas store, margaritas, and a new restaurant, all of which were really good.
We played backseat to the hi-fi filmers of the day and captured the moments in between. Skating to spots, warm-ups and some of the best times in skateboarding—hanging out with your friends. Oh, and bagels. If you go to Shanghai, get a bagel.
