Some like to say that New York City is over and done with. Corporate America had their way with the city and glossed it over. The pioneering spirit of the city is over and done with. I’d say “ehh” to those sentiments. Some truth in there indeed, however you just have to dig a bit deeper under the surface and certain subcultures are still alive. The Soul Summit party is one of those undergrounds that are still carrying momentum in the ever-changing landscape of the city. Carrying the torch from the days of Paradise Garage and The Loft, the party is held on weekends around different parks in the city. I caught up with one this past summer down in Coney Island on a hot summer Sunday on the boardwalk behind the Cyclone. One of the most colorful and eclectic crowds the energy is incredible with classic house and disco as the soundtrack for the afternoon.
