Brandon Harman

I GOT TO KNOW LA BASED PHOTOGRAPHER BRANDON HARMAN IN THE GREY, LATE SUMMER STREETS OF LONDON. AFTER I WATCHED HIM ROOFIE HIMSELF I FIGURED HE WAS A PRETTY INTERESTING CHARACTER.

I CAUGHT UP WITH HIM AGAIN AFTER MANY YEARS AND IT SEEMS HE IS STILL MAKING TIME FOR MAGICAL PERSONAL PROJECTS. THIS TIME WITH A CAMERA AROUND HIS NECK, UP AND DOWN THE HIGHWAYS OF NATURE’S BEST DREAMS.

When you take to the road do you have major plans or do you just roll with the vibe and the light and get out when the van gets stinky?

I like to roll with the vibe… I like the risk of last minute decisions. I started to document the places we stay for a project I’m calling “No Frills”. It’s been fun to see where we land for the night and where the next day takes us. I definitely plan when it comes to getting the light for a shot but after that we are scrambling to figure something out. The van always smells like lavender luckily thanks to my girlfriend for that.

Tell us a bit about your camera the Yashica T4, you’ve used in this story? Any funny stories from mishaps with film / or whilst getting film processed?

No real mishaps with that camera but I do continuously look at the back of the camera after every shot, as if I will see the image. It’s the curse of digital.

Do you prefer sunsets or sunrises for shooting?

Sunrise. I love to get up early.

I mostly enjoy the sound of the click for each shot… but what do you enjoy best about shooting on a film camera?

I enjoy the click as well! Also the wait for the film to be processed, it feels like pay day or something when I get it back.

What are your 3 favourite road foods?

I try to have only one meal a day or less at a restaurant… so
– Jerky when I can find a really good one
– Coffee constantly
– A good salad mix that I keep in my cooler.

And your 3 favourite all time road songs?

That’s a tough question … songs are too hard to name. I have to go with albums, is that okay?

Sure, I’m easy going..

Ok….
– Anything Nick Cave or Dead Moon
– Change Today by TSOL
– Disintegration by The Cure

That’s kind of more than three … next time I’m in LA it’s your shout for a whiskey night. Deal?

Deal.
