WHEN A LITTLE BIRD SINGS SOFT AND LOW IN YOUR EAR, YOU SHOULD LISTEN. MACLAY HERIOT IS A PHOTOGRAPHER TO WATCH. HE PREFERS FILM TO DIGITAL. HE GETS TO GO BACK STAGE AND INSIDE THE LIVES YOUR FAVOURITE MUSICIANS LEAD. WE ASKED HIM TO SHARE SOME OF HIS MOST MEMORABLE SHOTS AND MOMENTS SO FAR …
Iggy Pop – Melbourne Big Day Out 2012
When Iggy showed up to site in his black limo I wasn’t expecting him to be “wearing” his on stage get up, but he was. Black jeans and no shirt, ready to rock. I took this shot a few hours later.
Perry Farell and Sean White – Backstage Lollapalooza 2013
Perry and Sean jamming over two songs they would later perform, Janes Addiction’s “Under The Tahitian Moon” and The Stooges “Search And Destroy”.
The Vines – Somewhere in Sydney 2014
Shot for the release of The Vines new double LP “Wicked Nature”
Jagwar Ma – Bondi 2014
I wanted to play around with over dyeing some photos from a recent session with Jagwar Ma. I wanted to come up with something unachievable in photoshop. I like that this is a one off and would be near impossible to recreate.
Foals – Lollapalooza 2013
Just prior to this shot Yannis had climbed into the crowed and was passed around on his back all the while not missing a note. This is him trying to find a way back onto the stage.
Jesus Christ Pose – Adelaide Big Day Out 2013
Soundgarden opened their set with “Jesus Christ Pose” and this guy was right behind me, it seemed to immortalise to moment.
Portugal. The Man – Alaska 2014
I had been on the road with Portugal. The Man for 5 weeks and jumped at the opportunity to join them on a trip to their home town in Alaska. John and Zach took me out into the wild to an area they would go in the winter to snowboard. We had no plan just parked at the bottom of a massive mountain and walked straight up the tundra.
Portugal. The Man – Lollapalooza 2014
This was an incredible set, the crowd was massive and this was me trying to capture the magnitude of what was going down.
Children Collide – Melbourne Big Day Out 2012
Playing to a Melbourne home crowd on Australia day.
The Hives – Sydney Big Day Out 2014
One of the best live performances I have ever seen. Surprisingly the crowd was light on.
OFF! – Adelaide Big Day Out 2013
A punk group made of members from Black Flag/Circle Jerks, Redd Kross, Burning Brides and Rocket From The Crypt makes for a high energy, anarchist set. I love that these were the last two shots on my roll and that you can see the band name on the drummers laminate.
Arctic Monkeys – Sydney Big Day Out 2009
One of my first years on tour with Big Day Out and still one of my favourite shots. To see how much the band has matured in the last five years after watching them perform at Lolla. this year is incredible.
