Tonight in Brooklyn, PENS American Center is staging a protest in support of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, whom the Chinese government has banned from attending his own show in Brooklyn on the 17th of April.
The demonstration begins at the Brooklyn Public Library where PENS has organized an impressive cast of Ai supporters including Marina Abramović, Chuck Close, Agnes Gund, Anish Kapoor, Shirin Neshat, Susan Sarandon, and Julian Schnabel to read prose, poetry and testimonials of Chinese artists, after which attendees will handcuff themselves and proceed to the Brooklyn Museum. Here, a never-before-seen video from Ai will be projected onto the museum’s exterior by the Illuminator Truck used during the Occupy Wall Street protests. Artworks and prints by Ai Weiwei and Shepard Fairey will also be on display.
PEN’s 2009 rally for Liu on the steps of the New York Public Library ignited the campaign for his 2010 Nobel Peace Prize nomination and award.
