New to Monster Children online, but old the print, this is my first of what will be many contributions.

I'm obsessed with capturing movement through the use of slow shutter, some quick panning and a lot of luck. My photographic style has been described as grungey and abstract.

Stalking the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney with a Canon slung over my shoulder, there's always plenty to snap... sometimes bones, sometimes a deck, but more often than not it's the social malady that congregates in and around urban developments, which liberate and set forth the free spirit of our youth and elders alike - those who skate as a form of their own, individual expression of sub-cultural conformity.

Music is something that affects us all, it was Bono (Vocals from U2) that had once said "Music changes the world, because music changes people" Music and Photography are very similar, different genres and artist and each peice has it's own name. 696 has some Exciting… and Sad news. On Dec 13th they close the doors for the year and it will be for the last time. “The last 3 years have been so exciting and such a wonderful experience, but, as all good things must come to an end… the same applies for us.”

As much as Toby & Melika will be not found at 696 Sydney Rd anymore… you can’t get rid of them that easily, as they are not closing without good reason. Over the last couple years they have come to realise their strengths and weakness’… and where their passion lies… And that is with the artist. So it is with much excitement they announce…

“We are starting an Artist Representation Agency.” This is a really exciting evolution for the girls, and to show how happy they are they’re having a party! AUSSIE WORLD SURFING CHAMPION TO BE CROWNED LIVE ON FUEL TV

Hot on the heels of a successful LIVE surfing debut with coverage of last month’s Rip Curl Pro Search in Portugal, Fuel TV will present a comprehensive LIVE broadcast of the deciding event of the 2009 ASP World Surfing Tour from December 9.
Adding to the significance of this historic broadcast, LIVE coverage of the Hawaii event will feature a guaranteed local triumph with Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson locked in a two-way battle for the world surfing title.
Fanning, the 2007 World Champion and current world number one, continued his hot recent form by securing a third tour victory of the season in Portugal, building on his narrow lead over the second-ranked Parkinson.
The 28-year-old pair, born just two months apart, grew up together and competed on the breaks of the Coolangatta-Tweed Heads area where they headed up a group of local surfers known as the ‘Cooly Kids’.
Over the past eight years their rivalry has extended into the professional ranks whilst travelling the world together on the ASP Tour, where they have also continued their close friendship out of the surf.
But in just over a fortnight in Ohau, only one of them can win the 2009 world title.
Just 368 points separate the pair as the tour hits its final stop in Hawaii. Parkinson, the early season leader, rebounded strongly from a mid-year form slump to finish 3rd in Portugal and remain a chance to steal the crown from his life-long mate.
The event waiting period for Pipeline opens on Wednesday 9 December (AEDST) and FUEL TV will provide complete LIVE coverage of the final four days of the event.
FUEL TV Channel Manager Adam Howarth said the Billabong Pipeline Masters coverage follows a successful live broadcast of the Rip Curl Pro Search in Portugal.
“After dipping our toe in the water at the Portugal event, we were blown away by the reaction we got from FUEL TV viewers who were obviously thrilled to see surfing LIVE on their televisions,” said Howarth.
“We had a stack of emails and phone calls from viewers and this reaction confirmed our belief that the Australian surfing public were thirsty for surfing to be broadcast in the same fashion as the mainstream sports they are used to seeing.”
The Hawaii event will be delivered in favourable times for Australian viewers, with each day’s coverage scheduled to begin after sunrise in Australia.
“The timing of this historic event has worked out well considering there are two Aussies fighting it out for the world title, and the time difference between Australia and Hawaii means that our LIVE broadcast will be going to air from around 6am and continuing throughout the day until just after lunch time - perfect for surfers and mainstream viewers alike,” said Howarth.
Howarth added that former world surfing champion and FUEL TV’s own Mark Occhilupo will be in Hawaii as part of the broadcast.
“Given this is a Billabong event it will be great to hear FUEL TV host Mark Occhilupo’s expert commentary as well. Occy works on the coverage of other Billabong events as well and his insights are fantastic to listen to whether you have only a passing interest in surfing, or you’re a long time surfer,” he said.
The commencement of FUEL TV’s coverage of the final four days of the event will be dependant on weather and swell conditions.
“Because we are in the hands of the ocean, there are few sports as tricky as surfing from a live broadcasting perspective,” said Howarth.
“However given the awesome support of Billabong and Vans for this event, FUEL TV hopes to build on our coverage of LIVE surfing events and deliver the sport more regularly to our viewers.”
“For a million different reasons surfing is one of the best sports in the world, and we are very excited about the opportunity to be able to tell that story to the Australian sporting public.”

For years I avoided cheesecake, thinking it would make me vomit. Now I love it! I eat up all kinds of delicious cheesy treats. I even found one that you make with Oreos. If you've looked at the title of this piece you're probably wondering what the hell is this guy talking about, and WTF does cheesecake have to do with In4mation and Jun Jo? Well, Jun Jo and In4mation are both cheesecakes; made of unlikely ingredients, but similarly yielding impressive results.

The Exhibition will contain over 60 pieces from 20 Artist starting at $200. The works will range from street and urban art to beautiful landscapes. A majority of the works will be 30cm x 30cm the perfect size for christmas presents, and one major piece per artist.

ot unlike most trendsetting Brisbane artists, Keiron McMaster came of age in and around dank garages, surrounded by society’s misfits. Sketching away the dirty smoke-filled nights.

An artist in some form or another his entire life, Keiron’s artistic ambition grew from tattoo design and cover art for local band albums, to transition – more than two year ago – into moonlight liaisons in ridiculously huge houses that fostered his professional career.

As a Street Pop artist Keiron takes inspiration from his hazy teenage days, old friends and consumer society, so that his works resemble kaleidoscopes of modern iconography.

Keiron explains that “Commercialism was eating me”, so he began to mash-up modern icons of consumer society, such as Disney characters and hipster trends, into unique, fresh and at times dirty paintings.

“Just like artists of the Renaissance painted Jesus and god-like figures, I’ve chosen to paint today’s – Generation Y’s – popular culture icons like Mickey Mouse, 3D glasses and hamburgers; which funnily enough stand as admired modern-day ‘gods’,” Keiron says.

Similar to Pop Art pioneers Andy Warhol and Ron English, Keiron McMaster takes contemporary advertising and commercialism and transforms them into thought-provoking and totally fun works of art.

Making waves in Australia’s Low Brow art movement, Keiron McMaster is set to be a future luminary of the Gen-Y Street Pop scene.

Curious, chaotic and quite astonishingly mind-blowing, Andy Warde’s paintings are an exploration of his musings on everyday life and the things around him. Drawing on subject matter that reflects the instinctual repetition of a day combined with multiple characters, Warde’s work is a manifestation of the subconscious thoughts humans have day to day and how the average person operates to get through another day.

Warde’s paintings combine geometric shapes, buildings, people, animals, and even plants as an interpretation of himself to produce a gloriously surreal landscape of work.
“I am a self-taught American artist and so it makes sense that I paint about what I experience every day through an illusional type story frame,” Andy explains.
“There is a bit of my life and a bit of the world around me in every painting. I have had a lot of hard times and great times and want everyone to see both sides.
I’m always exploring the things we do, see and feel in society- that forms the basis of my work - but there are a few paintings that are more in touch with just one or two ideas – like fish!

“For this exhibition I have been practicing with an automatism style to try and fluidly release my subconscious thoughts and then capture in a more cubist style.

Characteristically critical and fussy over his work, Andy hopes people see what they want and need to see in his paintings. His relationship and exchange with each character, shape and brush stroke whilst creating each painting ensures his work as a deeply personal experience that Andy is happy to share with us all.

Elana Mullaly was never that bored as a kid, growing up in the North Queensland town of Tully. Not that Tully had much to do with it: Or maybe it had everything to do with it. Wishing herself away from the humdrum and hard work of rural life, Elana used art as her escape and, even today, her work shows us that she hasn't given up hope for something more, forever on the rabbit's heels like Alice in Lewis Carroll's Wonderland. She sucks the poison out of words like 'fun' and 'frivolous' and reminds us what it means to imagine. From ethereal, glassy-eyed girls with lustrous locks to miscellaneous animalia, Elana's work is, as she puts it, “a visual response to what I find beautiful. It is something that happens organically and in the moment... The way I drew when I was young; dreams, animals and nature.”

Luke Shirlaw likes to shoot first and ask questions later - and then shoot some more. His subjects, stricken with the terminal illness of real life, would prefer to be shot and transformed into something else: Like gorgeous ghosts, arisen from the gutter to hurl one more drunken remark, stumbling in expensive heels. Historically, common themes of Luke's work have been those that form a crude composite sketch of his lifestyle: graffiti, travel, music, people and the parties they leave as legacies. More recently, his work has evolved in its direction, falling into a more conceptual archetype. His latest collection explores the idea of identity: concealed vs exposed. The subjects are girls, faces masked and flesh free to breathe. The images create a curious contrast and form a captivating paradox for how we think about ourselves and others.

I am sending 8 disposable cameras around the world to 72 artists and photographers the take 2 shots each before passing it on to the next person.. Each camera is assigned a country (to keep costs down) and a color (to keep things interesting) and all 72 spots are nearly taken so id hurry my arse up and click on the link below if you wish to partake!

I have some amazing artists/photographers on board including Jen gotch, Ryan tatar, blair heath and max Wagner just to name a few... you dont have to be a pro though, you just have to love looking at life through a viewfinder!

Just above Ryan’s bed in the corner, the paint is peeling away from the walls. The red has flaked away to expose a shape similar to two old men talking, Ryan has taken a pencil and drawn the faces of Walter Matthau and Jack Lemon, the grumpy old men, on the stucco plaster exposed by the peel back. That pretty much sums up Heywood’s perception. He sees things that regular people don’t. He has an eye for angles, levels and detail that escape the normal human being.

BETWEEN A GHOST AND A GOD, is a solo exhibition of the new works by Justin Williams.
This most recent body of works, based on observation drawings completed in between travels on the way too and from destinations, with no focus taken on the journey. The images are juxtaposed with thoughts made either at the time of the sketches, or thoughts that are integrated into Justin’s every day.

Brisbane’s newly established concept gallery The Versus Gallery will be holding its debut of “The Versus Show” opening night on Friday June 19 at 7pm.
'The Versus Show' is a culmination of collaboration and mutual admiration between emerging photographer Beth Willis and skater/artist Jay Musk. They will be showcasing their work together for the first time- which will consist of Beth’s raw and ambient observational pieces plus her main work of documenting Jay Musk as a skater, versus Jay’s stencilled decks and painted pieces. This night will be a playground of skate and street culture, featuring music/dj Teva, wall projections, short films, live stencilling, and a built in skate ramp which will feature Jay skating on the night.

Both Jay and Beth’s work are quite opposite in their visual appearance but find symmetry at their strong senses of style. Beth’s work has a definite femininity to it, Jay’s work is heavily influenced by pop and skate culture. His stencil work is amazing: detailed, imaginative, he’s packed to the brim with talent. The current trend is all about collaboration, crossing industries, and being creatively versatile- Jay is at the forefront of this movement.
Beth, who picked up her first camera only a couple of years ago, has flown into the imaginative side of photography- she’s not necessarily too concerned about capturing her technical skill, but more about painting her subject purely for its aesthetics or in the case of Jay, the sheer awesomeness as a subject. She highlights people’s kookiness, she’ll capture the face of Abraham Lincoln in a cloud, the abstract structuring of a group of buildings at dusk, or the stoned eyes of a fly- Her only previous showing sold out, because her work lacks pretence, its modest and honest and very cool.

The Versus Show will open on the 19th June and run for one week. The opening night will not include a cover charge, just a night that provides a buffet of visual stimulus and a great opportunity to purchase the work of two of Brisbane’s top emerging artists while their pieces are still affordable.

The Versus Show will be curated by artist/designer Mel Baxter who kicked off The Versus Show concept September last year, which featured her and Melbourne designer Ben Thomson (Simian Lines) and special guest Lachie Goldsworthy (Era Culprits). She is now focusing her energies on curating The Versus Shows, which will be held every two months at The Versus Gallery.

The Winter of Discount Tents is the latest exhibition to show in the newly established Versus Gallery in the Valley, the second space by Joshua Collings.

Connected through childhood memories and experiences, the exhibition will showcase two artists, each at opposite ends of the spectrum.

Two local Brisbane artists have combined their talents in the newest gallery to the city, creating a very modern exhibition including all multi art forms.

Brisbane’s only concept gallery is located in the heart of the valley, the Versus gallery provides a place for artists to collaborate together. This allows a diverse range of artists and mediums, giving the opportunity for an artist to collaborate with a skateboarder, or a painter with a photographer.

The first of the collaborative artists Anthony, is showing a selection of paintings using translucent tones juxtaposed with heavy undertones, with each of the pieces exploring sex, guns and women.

His childhood has heavily impacted on the scenes in the work, as a self confessed cynic who attended 17 different schools in his education.

Coming from dramatic family, a conman for a father, watching call girls coming and going for his step mother- life was interesting for Anthony.

The trials and tribulations of his childhood are depicted in the very raw images in his work, the masculinity of the guns and femininity of the call girls.

Calling his paintings a tribute to his father, Anthony believes his work is a product of society.

“When I sell a painting I feel I’m getting away from a piece of my past,” he said. “For me, painting is a side effect of life.”

At the other end of the scale is Lucks, a # year old mixed media artist with a strong Catholic upbringing.

All different strands of religion of explored through his work, encapsulating his beliefs as well as the theme of good and bad luck.

Utilising more ‘modern’ artistic techniques, Lucks combines pop graffiti and tattoo, juxtaposed with religious images.

His work is contradictory- society vs religion in a sense, good and bad luck, as sen tattooed upon his knuckles.

Not afraid to push the boundaries, Joshua Collings sees the Versus gallery as a new outlet for emerging artists, who without this space may not get to showcase their talents.

“I am always looking for something outside the square, raw talent to which I can be a mentor as well as a curator,” he said.
“There is some fantastic art in Brisbane, and in a scene which is currently growing so rapidly, I want the Versus gallery to showcase the artists who really stand out,” he said.

The gallery is curated by two people, on alternate months which is unique to this gallery. Byron and Peter run the gallery exhibition on odd months and showcase some of the best emerging and professional street artist, both national and internationally.

On even months the gallery is curated by Joshua Levi , Jasmin Coleman and Mel Baxter and one guest curator. This bounces ideas through the exhibitions and gives an opportunity to so many more emerging artists. The goal of the Versus Gallery is to bring exposure to first time and emerging artists, through solo exhibitions.

The gallery nurtures and guides the artists, making sure their work, exhibition and launch is a platform for their success. Due to the rapidly growing art scene, this allows up to 4 exhibitions a month, or a minimum of 8 contributing artists.

The gallery is located on one of the busiest streets of Brisbane, boasting 50 000 cars passing every day, maximising the exposure these artists will receive.

FUCK CITY - A COLLECTION OF NEW WORKS BY JOEL BIRCH

The frontman for The Amity Affliction and former art director for Brisbane creative team The Kingdom of Sad Machines will be exhibiting a collection of new works - ranging from the illustrative and type-based work he’s renowned for – to his recent venture into photography (though Joel makes it very clear that he does not consider himself a photographer).

The photographic works you will see are a collection of shots from an old Pentax he picked up months ago, and capture various aspects of his own life – touring with Amity Affliction, and in his own words ‘I get to see so many amazing places and hang out with interesting people that I would otherwise never meet, I feel the need to capture that...’.

Now a full-time graphic designer, Joel works predominantly with a range of bands & clothing labels under Umbrella Creative Services. He attributes his love for graphic design and type-based work to graffiti, something he began experimenting with at the tender age of 17. Through graffiti, Joel ‘developed a deep fascination with letterforms and how they fit together’. This is evident to anyone familiar with The Kingdom of Sad Machines, Joel’s former collaboration with other Brisbane artists who were responsible for the output of the Death Before Dishonour & Artillery publications. He credits (amongst others), the likes of Alex Trochut, Jeff Canham, Ed Woodley & Mike Giant as influences on his own work.

Though having exhibited works for various shows in recent years (I used to skate once & our very first Nine Lives exhibition to name drop), this is Joel Birch’s first solo show. It runs for one week only, opening early Friday evening.

These things are mostly jokes and puns. It’s a very descent collection of weird gags. They’re all brightly coloured, that’s important. I like brightly coloured things. Some of the work is a bit creepy, that’s not strictly deliberate but it’s mostly how it goes. I don’t have a problem with that. The last painting I did worked beautifully, everything is awkward; it’s like looking at a broken magic eye picture, you can’t focus on it properly. I’m surprised it’s really as good as it is. In fact, it was so good I made two of them. I like to get mileage from an idea, so I often paint a couple of the same thing. I expect this makes the work less exclusive. I think I like that, I want to be inclusive, it’s so much friendlier and I want to be friendly. I’m not very good at that, and I don’t meet people easily.

Chris Bennett Exhibition "Downtime" from Saturday 13th

Chris Bennett's new exhibition "Downtime" will launch at Ransom Gallery, Eumundi, from Saturday 13th December.

Chris has been developing his current series over the last three years, focusing on themes of urban alienation, entropy and social decay, and the slow death of personal aspiration.

His particular focus is on the intimate and private moments when an individual pauses to reflect on the stagnancy of routine, fleeting adolescence or an intangible burden.

Chris Bennett is an Australian artist currently living in Franklin, Tasmania. He grew up on the Sunshine Coast and moved to Brisbane in 2000. There, he completed his Bachelor of Fine Art in 2006, and continued in 2007 to obtain first class honours at the Queensland College of Art.

Chris has exhibited in various group and solo exhibitions over the past three years, and has been a finalist in both the Theiss Art Prize, the Stanthorpe Art Prize and Redbubble.com "In the Moment" Competition.
