The inaugural winner of the Levi’s® Music Prize has been named as Perth singer-songwriter Stella Donnelly.

Word on the street is that the ten-strong panel of judges voted unanimously for the Perth musician, after seeing both her solo act and performances with her band Boat Show. Her insane vocals and engaging on stage performance helped her to nab the top prize, as well as a record deal at the beginning of this year. The judging panel was made up of Jane Abernethy (4AD), Jackie Nalpant(Paradigm), Mary Ramos (Saturday Music Inc), Melissa Woods (Third Side Music), Jillian Mapes (Pitchfork), Stuart Myer(Sub Pop), Peter Berard (Domino), Mazin Tappuni (Communion), Marshall Betts (Paradigm) and Mike Ajayi (All My Friends).

Stella won $25K as part of the inaugural Levi’s® Music Prize, but she won’t be the only one. Three more rounds of prizes, all worth $25K will be handed out during the rest of the year, to other standout performers from Big Sound that are looking for that much-needed start in a difficult industry. Levi’s® will be giving away a massive $300K over the next three years to support young, local talent in Australi’s music scene, and that’s something we can definitely get behind. Congratulations to Stella Donnelly, winner of this year’s Levi’s® Music Prize at Big Sound—we’re sure to be seeing a lot more of you very soon.
