Last night was the opening party for Patagonia Bowery in NYC, taking over the gritty turf where CBGB once stood (part of the club’s original bathroom is actually preserved in the shop’s basement, crust-punk stickers and ancient coke residue included). This the fourth Patagonia store to open in NYC but the first of their surf-specific shops on the East Coast, so the opening drew a great crowd. Roberta’s brought their mobile wood-burning stove and were churning out fresh pizzas in the back while bartenders from Sixpoint handed out local beers. The Waves for Water silent auction downstairs brought out the Rockaway crew to support the cause, and New Jersey natives Real Estate showed up, encouraging the crowd to support post-Sandy-clean-up projects between songs. People lined up around the block and packed the shop beyond capacity, and kooks mingled with Malloy brothers and Patagonia surf ambassadors till way too late. Bowery manager DL Tashijan swung through the crowd, pouring beers and slapping backs. The shop is planning on hosting tons of events including film screenings and art shows, so we can look forward to more good times with the Bowery crew.
