Everyone is up in arms about the sale of this image, titled ‘Potato #345’, which went for 2 million smackeroos. The portrait of the organic tater was snapped by Irish photographer Kevin Abosch and sold to a European businessman who saw the image while dining at Abosch’s abode.
According to Abosch, he took the photo after deciding the soiled spud shared similarities with humans, saying, ‘Generally, the life of a harvested potato is violent and taken for granted. I use the potato as a proxy for the ontological study of the human experience.’
Before you gawk at the price paid for this piece, can we just take into account that this is an organic potato, which alone would have cost Abosch a couple of G’s. Still, it’s obvious he’s made a decent profit, post grocery run. Had it have been an ode to the avocado, completely different story.
If the reported price paid for the piece is true, it is the 15th most expensive photograph ever purchased.
Taters gonna tate.
